Public art embellish infrastructural works for a nicer environment in Gozo

Six out of 13 works of art which were commissioned by the Ministry for Gozo are now embellishing various public spaces in Gozo.  This was stated by Hon. Giovanna Debono during her visit to two works of art which were installed recently under this this Public Art scheme.

The Minister explained how this scheme, launched by the Ministry for Gozo in December 2010, was one of the initiatives related with the implementation of the ecoGozo Action Plan 2010-2012. Apart from embellishing public spaces in Gozo, this scheme has the scope of promoting creativity and local artistic talent.

The latest works of art installed include one by Gozitan resident Paolo Giordanella.  This artist designed and installed a large grasshopper resting on a leaf. This sculpture with the title Natural Environment was modelled in steel and copper and was placed in a roundabout between Ghajnsielem and Xewkija to accompany and complement both the rural environment and the extensive restructuring roadworks which were done is this area.

Another monument is the one sculpted by Nicholette Vella, a Gozitan artist. Ms. Vella created U uh-Poplu, a contemporary monument, on Coralline Limestone showing various engraved faces. This momument will be greeting all those entering Victoria from the bus terminus area, which has also recently been upgraded to complement the recent introduction of the new public transport system.

These two works of art follow other similar works which include il-Menhir, work on terracotta by Kathleen Formosa installed at Three Hills Garden in Marsalforn; Gozo Gossiping, a sclupture by Joe Xuereb in Globigerina Limestone and Serenita, a bronze work by Maltese artist Angelo Agius, both of them installed at Villa Rundle; and Mer'ba fil-Fjuri, a mosiac work installed at Mgarr Terminal.

A total of 64 artists participated in the Public Art scheme. These included Gozitan, Maltese and foreigners residing in Malta, which in all submitted a total of 120 maquettes. 43 were chosen of which 13 have already been commissioned to be installed on a larger scale in various public spaces in Gozo.
