Conference on the common strategy for Innovation in Agriculture
Gozo hosts a conference on the common strategy for Innovation in Agriculture in the Mediterrenean islands
A 3-day conference on the common strategy for innovation in agriculture in the Mediterrenean islands kicked off this morning in Gozo. This conference is being attended by delegates from the member Mediterrenean islands within the AGRISLES project, coming from Corsica (France), Balearic Islands (Spain), North Aegean Sea (Greece), Azores (Portugal), Sicily and Sardenia (Italy), Cyprus and Gozo. This project is part of the European Programme MED 2007 – 2013 that concerns countries which are situated in the Northern part of the Mediterranean.
The Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo opened this conference during which the delegates will be evaluating the progress that has been registered in the island regions which are part of this project, planning their endeavours during the next phases as well as familiarising themselves with the island region of Gozo and its agricultural sector. The Minister emphasised that the Ministry for Gozo will be strongly participating in this project mainly through the presentation of its pilot project consisting of the establishment of the state-of-the-art Centre for Research, Development and Innovation in Agriculture and the Environment. She added that the setting up of this centre is being held with the collaboration of the University of Malta and it will be allocated on the site that presently houses the Government Experimental Farm in Xewkija which is currently undergoing upgrading works. The Minister for Gozo said that this project, which includes infrastructural works and the establishment of scientific laboratories, will be open for research on the ecology and agriculture in Gozo by the students and staff at the University. Minister Debono concluded that this centre will be one of the main contributors for Gozo to become an ecological island.
This conference will include technical meetings as well as a visit to the Government Experimental Farm and other sites of agricultural interest in Gozo. Through this, participants will be provided with an outlook on the Agricultural Sector in Gozo and the recent initiatives recently taken up in order that the Agricultural Sector would prove to be an important component of the economy on the island of Gozo. This will also lead to higher levels of sustainability.
The AGRISLES project aims to create a new network of cooperation between the Mediterrenean islands in relation to innovation in agriculture as well as to promote the sharing of resources in order to enable the islands in overcoming common challenges within their agricultural sectors.
