Construction and restoration of Għajn tal-Loġoġ in Fontana
New construction and restoration works of L-Għajn tal-Loġoġ found near L-Għajn tal-Ħasselin (wash-house) are in full swing. This work is being carried out by the Fontana Local Council and is being financed by the Ministry for Gozo under the eco-Gozo scheme for Local Councils.
The Minister for Gozo, the Hon. Giovanna Debono, who visited the works being carried out on site, reminded of the importance of this locality and also the attraction it serves for tourists who visit the island. Minister Debono explained how this is only one of the many initiatives aimed at promoting Gozo as a unique touristic destination which are being implemented with the aid of the eco-Gozo scheme. Projects being undertaken by other Local Councils include the building of rubble walls, conservation of rural and characteristic areas, restoration of historical and old buildings, and rehabilitation of promenades. Other environment related projects include the cleaning of valleys, better use of energy saving lighting and the replacement of vehicles with eco-friendly ones.
Minister Giovanna Debono expressed her satisfaction for the positive take-up of this scheme where e local councils and3 Administrative Committees are implementing 13 different projects. All projects which are in line with the eco-Gozo programme have received a total grant of more than €660,000, with a maximum grant of €70,000 for each Local Council or Administrative Committee. "This scheme is resulting in the active participation of Gozitan localities in the Government's plan to turn the eco-Gozo vision into reality", stated the Hon. Giovanna Debono.
Meanwhile the second call for the same scheme was launched this week so that those Local Councils who have not benefited under the first call or those who did not benefit from the maximum grant of €70,000 under the first call can submit their application. Applications will be received until Monday 29th August 2011.
Apart from this project, the Fontana Local Council is implementing two other projects under the same scheme. These include the installation of a multi-lingual information panel to be placed near the wash house and the fitting of a number of decorative energy-saying lights.
