Minister consults Gozo Mayors on Eco-Gozo
Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono has recently met the Mayors of Gozitan localities to consult them on the Eco-Gozo vision and the strategy document which is currently being drafted. A number of Ministry officials working on the subject were also in attendance.
In her introduction to the eeting, the Minister expressed her satisfaction and the wide interest shown by the general public in the Eco-Gozo initiative. She maintaned that the interest and commitment shown by organisations, businesses and the public will ensure that the strategy adopted will be made up of a wide perspective of opinions which will guaranteee the success of this ambitious project. which will touch upon the economic, social and environmental aspects on the island. Minister Debono praised the work and the initiatives taken by Gozitan Local Councils and stressed that for this reason, their input in the drafting of the strategy is crucial. Local Councils' involvement is also of great importance for the implementation of the Eco-Gozo vision at a local level.
Mayors present for the meeting were first given a short presentation introducing the Eco-Gozo vision, and a discussion on a wide number of related topics ensued. Among the issues discussed, the Minister raised a suggestion recieved from a young person during the consultation process regarding the setting up of Eco-groups in every locality. These groups would be intended to promote the concepts of sustainable development within the locality. Various issues specific to various localities in Gozo were also raised.
All Mayors present agreed that they hould collaborate in order to take this concept at a local level. They also agreed that every council should take up an initiativegeared towards the Eco-Gozo objectives in order to bring tangible change and results as close as possible to the citizens.
Minister Debono announced that her Ministry was preparing for an educational campaign through which trained personnel will visit every household on the island to give advice on energy and water savings, waste separation and general information on Eco-Gozo. This initiative is being organised with the support of Government's waste management company Wasteserv.
The Eco-Gozo consultation which was launched in July ais at giving everyone the opoortunity to voice his/her opinions on the future of the island of Gozo. A publication has been distributed in every household while a consultation website www.eco-gozo.gov.mt has been launched specifically for this exercise. This consultatin process is being supported by a high interest by the general public and in procss, meetings with various public and private stakeholders are being held.
