Ta’ Kercem benefits also from the eco-Gozo scheme for Local Councils
The Ministry for Gozo has granted over ¬42,000 to the Kercem Local Council for the building and restoration of rubble walls and the changing of street lighting in the locality. These two projects are being implemented through the scheme issued by the Ministry for Gozo for Gozitan Local Councils and Administrative Committees and are being financed from funds allocated by the Government for the implementation of the eco-Gozo action plan 2010-2012.
One of the projects being implemented by the Kercem Local Council includes the building and restoration of rubble walls in Xaghri Street, Xuxa Street, Santa Katerina tal-Qabbie|a Street and il-Kalandrijiet Street. Some of these streets are found in the area known as l-G'adira ta' San Raflu which is a site of attraction for this area to which special attention is being dedicated. The other project approved by this scheme is the changing of street lighting in Xuxa Street and St Gregory Street.
The Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo visited the site where works are being carried out. She expressed her gratitude and thanked the Kercem Local Council for its participation in this scheme and stated that with the building of rubble walls, this locality is joining other four localities; Xaghra, Nadur, Marsalforn and St Lucija, which are all embellishing the rural environment in Gozo while at the same time collectively addressing soil conservation.
The Minister for Gozo made reference to the second project being implemented by the Kercem Local Council which will not only reducing the public electrical consumption but will also encourage residents to reduce the electrical consumption at home.
This project is one of 13 projects being implemented by 8 Local Councils and 3 Administrative Committees that are benefiting from this scheme. Other environment related projects include valley cleaning, afforestation projects and replacement of vehicles in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.
