The Ministry for Gozo finances project by Din l-Art Ħelwa

Copy of mgoz ecogozo-NGO DinL-ArtHelwa nov2011 DSC 1903Through the eco-Gozo scheme for Non Governmental Organisations, the Ministry for Gozo is financing a project by Din l-Art Helwa amounting to around ¬24,000.  These funds will be used for a project that incorporates the installation of interpretation panels in various historical sites in Gozo and Comino and the production of a DVD on the islands historical heritage.

The Minister for Gozo, the Hon. Giovanna Debono visited Xlendi Tower, one of the sites that is benefitting from this grant, where a total of 10 interpretation panels were installed.  In the presence of Din l-Art &elwa officials and Munxar Mayor, the Minister for Gozo stated that thanks to the installation of these interpretation panels, tourists visiting these historical sites in Gozo and Comino can access interesting information and increase their knowledge on these sites.  She added that these panels will be another educational source for students who will visit these sites.

Apart from the interpretation panels at Xlendi Tower, Din l-Art &elwa is also installing another 12 interpretation panels at Saint Mary Tower, in Comino and eight at the Qala Battery.  Information on these panels includes notes on the historical importance of these sites, ecology, historical sites found in the vicinities, traditions, lifestyles and marine biodiversity found in these localities. Children visiting these sites will be given interactive project work sheets in order to enhance their educational experience.  At Saint Mary Tower in Comino, Din l-Art &elwa will also be installing an audio-visual system and chairs so that visitors can view footage related to these historical sites in Gozo and Comino.

Another part of the project included the production of a 30 minute DVD on the historical heritage in Gozo.  This DVD, A tale of two towers, portrays the significant fortifications found in Gozo and Comino, while also giving information on their historical importance.

Xlendi Tower is currently being restored by Din l-Art &elwa in collaboration with the Munxar Local Council.  This tower was built in 1650 by the Grandmaster Lascaris.
