Students, family and educators together for a healthier life

Copy of MGOZ 06032012 01 - CopyGozitan students, mothers, grandparents and educators participated in an activity by the Ministry for Gozo with the aim to promote good healthy practices in relation to the preparation and choice of food.  The aim of this activity, named Healthy Living Brunch, is in conformity with the ecoGozo action plan 2010-2012 and in-line with the strategy Pi| tajjeb tul il-&ajja launched on a national level by the Ministry for Health, the Elderly and Community Care.

During her welcoming address, the Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, explained the Ministrys ecoGozo vision which placesthe individuals well-being in the centre of its action-plan. A caring society, healthy lifestyles and education are equally important to the environment as regards the social development of every individual.

The aim of the Healthy Living Brunch was to continue to inform people on the importance in conducting a healthy lifestyle.  These principals have now been entrenched in the educational system and serve as a benchmark for children in their daily routine.  This is an opportunity for parents, grandparents and adults alike, whose role is to influence their childrens lifestyle, to learn and listen what students are taught at school stated Minister Debono.  She explained that professional assistance in the educational and health sector in Gozo are given in both schools and at the Gozo General Hospital.  These services are being coordinated by the respective sections in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo.

During the activity professionals in this field made presentations with practical examples on how to improve the quality of life.  All those present had the possibility to exchange information with the professionals on a personal basis in order to clear any misconceptions.  The speakers were Dr John Xuereb - visiting doctor at Gozitan schools, Ms Eileen Vella - nutritionist at the Gozo General Hospital, Mr Felix Busuttil  Director of YADA dance company and Chef George Borg. Students attending the Institute of Tourism Studies in Gozo together with their tutors prepared healthy snacks for all those attending this event.

The Health Awareness Committee within the Gozo General Hospital will be organising another public activity in order to increase awareness on good healthy practices and encourage people to follow a balanced diet, conduct physical exercise and test their  blood on a regular basis.
