Wind pumps restoration scheme - presentation of grants
The Minister for Gozo recently presented a subsidy to eighteen Gozitan farmers who have restored broken wind pumps located in their fields. This subsidy was made available through a scheme launched by the Ministry for Gozo in May 2009 as one of the first eco-Gozo initiatives.
The scheme covered 75% of the costs incurred in upgrading the machinery and the structure of the wind pumps up to a maximum of € 1000. It was intended to valorise traditional uses of renewable energy, and to promote this particular application as a traditional sustainable measure which is still applicable today.
During the presentation, the Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, explained how this was one of the first initiatives of the Ministry for Gozo in the process to achieve an ecological island. The Minister explained also that the project's aim is to create a better Gozo in environmental, economic and social aspects. She also said that the agricultural sector takes a primary relevance for this vision since it guarantees the conservation of the typical rural landscape of the island.
Minister Debono thanked all those who applied for this scheme, making possible the restoration of eighteen water pumps of which some were in a dilapidated state of conservation, bringing them back into use. She also said that the Ministry for Gozo intends to re-issue this scheme.
