Another 8 localities benefit from a scheme issued by the Ministry for Gozo
Eight projects will be implemented in eight localities in Gozo through the financing of ¬400,000 under the ecoGozo scheme for Local Councils and Administrative Committees. This is the second call launched for Local Councils to implement projects in conformity with the ecoGozo action plan 2010-2012.
The Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo announced this in a press conference attended by Mayors and Executive Secretaries of Fontana, Ghajnsielem, Kercem, San Lawrenz, Sannat, Victoria, Xewkija and Zebbug. During this activity the same Mayors and Executive Secretaries of the identified localities signed the project agreements with the Ministry for Gozo.
The Minister Giovanna Debono expressed her gratitude to all the Local Councils and Administrative Committees in Gozo for showing their interest in the two calls under this scheme, where they submitted various proposals for the benefit of Gozo. This interest is also a proof of the active participation and commitment to the Governments strategy, in relation to the implementation of the ecoGozo action plan based on sustainable development. Minister added that these projects will have a beneficial impact in the respective areas of operation both to the localities and the region in general. The eight projects launched will improve the landscape and public amenities of the villages, assist the conservation and upgrading of rural and natural heritage sites and shall also involve initiatives related to good environmental practices.
These eight projects will be allocated around ¬400,000 and will complement another 13 projects with a total allocation of ¬660,000 which were implemented by 8 Local Councils and 3 Administrative Committees under the first call of this scheme. Most of the Local Councils have benefitted from the maximum amount of ¬70,000, of which 95% of the total expenditure is financed by the Ministry for Gozo. Minister Debono stated that these projects will help to provide better and new services for both residents and visitors alike. The Ministry for Gozo will continue to provide all the support and collaboration to Local Councils and Administrative Committees as has been done since their inception. Together we will continue to work for the benefit of the whole island, stated the Hon. Giovanna Debono.
Apart from the two calls launched under this scheme aimed at Local Councils, the Ministry for Gozo coordinated work with another scheme for Non Governmental Organisations operating in Gozo. Through these two schemes EcoGozo will be financing the implementation of a total of 59 projects with a total budget of ¬2.5 million.
