The Ministry for Gozo condemns the acts of vandalism
The Ministry for Gozo condemns the acts of vandalism that have been taking place in recent weeks in the sites known as Ta’ Lambert, limits of Xewkija and at It-Taksis, limits of Qala. These acts resulted in the theft or destruction of 39 trees which were planted in the first week of November 2012, estimated to cost around €800. These include 18 Carob trees, 9 Sandarac gum trees, 5 Holm Oak trees, 1 Bay Laurel tree, 2 Mediterranean buckthorn trees, 3 Olive trees and 1 Judas tree.
This afforestation is part of the SIMBOITIC project (Sicily-Malta BIOgeographical Transboundary Insular Connectivity), which aims to strenghten the ecological link between the South East of Sicily and Gozo through the restoration and rehabilitation of the natural habitat of the island of Gozo and through the management of protected areas in Sicily and Gozo. Through this project, around 1000 trees and bushes were planted in four sites in Gozo, among them Ta’ Lambert and it-Taksis.
In the previous days, an information billboard at Ta’ Lambert indicating that this project is partially funded by the European Union was also stolen. While condeming these acts of vandalism, the Ministry for Gozo will take all the necessary steps to re-instate the area.
