EcoGozo projects inaugurated in Gozitan schools
Hon. Anton Refalo, Minister for Gozo has inaugurated a number of ecoGozo projects in schools in Gozo. These projects were financed under the ecoGozo schools’ scheme, where each school had the opportunity to benefit from a total grant of €3000.
A total of 16 schools are benefitting from this scheme. These include nine primary schools, seven of which within the Gozo college namely Xewkija, Qala, San Lawrenz, Nadur, Ghajnsielem, Xaghra and Zebbug, and two Church schools being St Therese Primary, Kercem, and the Bishop Conservatory Primary, Victoria. There are two schools at Secondary level, one of which within the Gozo College - Girls Secondary School, and a Church school namely Bishop Conservatory Secondary. Furthermore, the Centre for further studies Sir M.A. Refalo and MCAST Gozo at post-secondary level, the Major Seminary at tertiary level, as well as the School of Music and the Gozo centre for Arts and Crafts, Wistin Camilleri.
These projects include the procuring of sports equipment, purchasing and installation of audiovisual conference equipment, gazebos, a music reference library, the purchasing of interactive whiteboards, bicycle racks, a kitchen lab, climbing equipment, purchasing of microscopes for the biology lab, material and lessons regarding pottery, science kits, furniture for school grounds, gymnastic equipment, rubber flooring for a school gym and a discussion on Permaculture promoting organic farming.
Gozo College Għajnsielem Primary: This project included the conversion of an old library room, which is not in use anymore, into a kitchen laboratory so as to be able to teach students basic food preparation skills and allow the organisation of healthy eating sessions.
Centre for further studies Sir M.A. Refalo: 16 new microscopes for the Biology laboratory were purchased in order to help students during their Biology lectures. This ensures a better education for students and eventually increases the prospect of securing more jobs in the Medical Sector and other science related fields.
Gozo College Nadur Primary: This school invested in the refurbishment of the concrete playground, measuring around 220sq. metres, with safety mats. These tiles have the capacity of absorbing impacts and thus minimizing the risk of injury to children when using the playground.
Gozo College Qala Primary: The school ground has been equipped with sports/outdoor furniture so as to enhance the idea of promotion of a healthy lifestyle and increase the students’ drive for recreational outdoor activities.
Gozo College Żebbuġ Primary: Through this project, physical activity is being promoted both during as well as after school hours. The project included the refurbishment of the school’s indoor gymnasium and ensuring the possibility of practising sport activities even in adverse weather conditions.
