Open week for Home-Start in Gozo

Home Start Gozo

Home-Start Gozo is currently during its second volunteers campaign. As part of this yearly event, Home-Start has been given the opportunity to campaign at Arkadia Gozo, on Friday 22nd November and at The Duke Shopping Mall on Saturday 23rd November. Home-Start Gozo office will also be open to the public on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th November for persons who are interested in joining the group of volunteers as well as for others who may be interested in using the service. Our office can be found at Hope Flats, Flat 3, Chambray Street, Ghajnsielem.

Home-Start offers volunteer-based, parent-to-parent support to persons raising at least one child under the age of five. The service is new and unique to Gozo, aiming to support parents by offerring practical help, a listening ear and advice. Families who may benefit from the service may be feeling isolated or lacking support, may have experienced multiple births such as twins or triplets, may be facing illness or death in the family,  or may feel they are going through a particularly difficult time.

After meeting the family, a suitable volunteer will then be matched. The volunteer will then offer once-weekly support  and guidance for two to three hours each week. A friendly relationship will be built between the parent and volunteer, providing non-judgemental and confidential support. Through this relationship, parents will be helped to cope better in their challenging situation for the benefit of themselves and their children.

Volunteers will receive a 40 hour preparation course and ongoing professional support throughout their work with families. Our volunteers are mature, friendly and caring individuals who are aware of what being a parent entails.

Home-Start Gozo is a service within Dar Guzeppa Debono and funded by the Ministry for Gozo. It is part of the international network of Home-Start schemes, mainly based in the UK. Home-Start Gozo is the second service to function on the Maltese Islands following Home-Start Malta which has been running for several years.
