Gozo-Rocks! Clean & Green Hikes
Excellent Initiative by Local Youth Club
Last Saturday, a nice dip in the cool Gozitan sea brought to an end a campaign organised by the Gozo Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club to make Gozo a cleaner place. Gozo-Rocks! Clean & Green Hikes is a campaign that started in January and which ran through the first six months of the year.
The main purposes of these hikes were to give Gozitan youth a chance to admire Gozo's most secluded places while making an effort to improve Gozo's environment through the cleaning up that took place. Hiking is also very good for both body and mind so these hikes also served to promote a healthy lifestyle.
The number of weekly participants in the Gozo-Rocks! Clean & Green Hikes ranged from 20 to 40 volunteers. The combination of all hikes led the volunteers to walk the entire perimeter of Gozo, that is 121.4km! The most rewarding aspect for these enthusiastic volunteers is that, thanks to their efforts, they know that Gozo is now 462 bags of rubbish cleaner!
The kids who volunteered described these hikes as "challenging", "exciting" and "rewarding". Such comments are very encouraging for Mr Louis Debattista, the mind behind these hikes, who's already planning the organisation of the Gozo-Rocks! Clean & Green Hikes for 2015. It is also great to see children enjoying themselves while contributing towards the Gozitan environment.
Here at ecoGozo, we would like to encourage similar organisation to follow in the footsteps of the Gozo Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club. Furthermore, the ecoGozo team would like to congratulate Louis, the volunteers from the Gozo Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club and all those who collaborated towards this excellent initiative. Well done guys, you rock!
