A new public garden in Marsalforn
"The eco-Gozo vision promotes the creation of more recreational spaces for Gozitan families". This was stated by the Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, during an onsite visit where structural work connected with the planning of the Three Hills Garden in Marsalforn is being carried out.
Three Hills Garden in Marsalforn is one of four afforestation projects with regards to the implementation of the action plan related to the eco-Gozo vision. This will result in the planting of more trees, the embellishment of related areas and more recreational spaces for families. The Marsalforn project is being coordinated by the Ministry for Gozo while trees are sponsored by Magro Brothers Foods Ltd, as part of its activities marking the seventieth anniversary since the launching of their first product under the Three Hills brand.
During her visit Minister Debono explained what actions are being taken in line with the eco-Gozo action plan. Apart from the new garden in Marsalforn, similar work is being carried out on three other afforestation sites. Another environment related programme is that connected with the cleaning of valleys and restoration of water dams in Gozo's main valleys. This in order to promote more effectively the collection of rain water in order to subsequently reduce the pressure on the water-table. Another eco-Gozo initiative is that related with the resource pack for teachers. This resource pack will be used by teachers in Gozitan secondary schools as from this scholastic year during lessons related with health, culture, languages, history and natural sciences. Eco-Gozo also aims to promote good environmental friendly practices. Presently, the possible installation of more solar energy systems on roofs of public buildings are being carried out, while preparatory works connected with the building of an indoor pool and other sports facilities near the Gozo Sports Complex are underway. Another important on-going project is that which will see the restructuring of Villa Rundle gardens. This project is being co-financed through the European Regional Devolpment Fund and will result in the embellishment of this historical public garden found in the heart of Victoria.
'The projects currently underway together with those that are still upcoming are all intended to raise Sustainable Development Standards in Gozo thus contributing in our endeavours to implement the eco-Gozo action plan,' concluded Minister Giovanna Debono.
