Marsalforn Valley Project

€225,000 Project Inaugurated

On Friday 17th April, the Minister for Gozo, Anton Refalo, inaugurated the project done in Marsalforn Valley by ecoGozo. The cleaning of this valley is part of ecoGozo’s valley cleaning programme that has seen several valleys cleaned throughout the past few years. Through the said programme, ecoGozo managed to increase rainwater harvesting potential by 53 million litres of water a year.

Anton Refalo said that it is the Ministry for Gozo’s vision to continue improving and caring for Gozo’s environment. Such projects will only help Gozo become an eco-Island.

The valley underwent several works which included the placement of a new sewage rising main, construction and maintenance of walls, the cleaning of 950 metres of the valley as well as the complete restructuring of the road adjacent to the valley. In addition to this, the Ministry also planted 50 trees in the area. The accumulated cost of these works is approximately €225,000. As a direct result of this project, the flooding in the valley and in Marsalforn has decreased considerably. The Minister also mentioned Wied il-Kbir in San Lawrenz that was recently cleaned at a cost of €26,000.

For the inauguration of the  Marsalforn Valley project, an educational activity was held in the area surrounding the valley. Students from Gozitan primary schools took part in several activities that included science experiments, tree planting and a walk along the valley.  During the walk, these students were given information about the trees and plants that are found at the valley. Furthermore, these students were also lectured on the importance of rainwater storage and the significance of the inaugurated project.

The Minister for Gozo expressed his satisfaction at the completion of this project. The countryside is one of Gozo’s biggest assets and these valley cleaning projects have helped add value to the Gozitan countryside. The Minister urged the public to visit Marsalforn Valley, see the vast improvement made to the area, and admire the beauty of the surroundings, especially now that we are in spring.
